Focus on the context to design effective compliance training programs

There are certain factors that tend to play a key role in the entire cycle of designing and delivering compliance training programs. These factors are largely related to the way employees perceive the training – the right perspective, in turn, encourages them to adopt a compliant outlook and act in a way that works for the greater good of the organization.

An effective learning intervention could be designed with the right combination of different learning factors. In Part 1 of the post on Designing impactful compliance training programs, we will look at CONTEXT.

To bring the context of the learning intervention in focus, it’s essential to facilitate interaction and collaboration among all the stakeholders involved in the process – employees themselves, organizations, and even regulatory bodies.

While most executives may look at compliance programs as mandatory tasks that cost the organization, it would be helpful for organizational leaders to carefully examine compliance programs and view them in their true light – that is, as initiatives to help businesses run better by minimizing non-compliance risk. Any compliance requirements that organizations meet as a result would simply be a by-product of those initiatives and interventions.

What may therefore benefit compliance programs is looking at compliance as a by-product of ensuring that business practices are aligned in favor of operational success. This shift in perspective towards the context of learning can help alleviate the pressure and stress that organizations experience each year around their annual regulatory audits. Once operational success becomes the pivotal point, it is possible for employees to welcome compliance interventions as initiatives that establish principles, processes, and best practices to guide rather than impede their daily business activities.

As a consequence, a compliance program could benefit both the organization and employees by turning into an ongoing intervention that makes its contextual relevance clear to all impacted.
