Microsoft Surface: Will It Help mLearning?

Written by

Yesterday Microsoft finally unveiled its new tablet called Surface. It seems to have made a solid first impression, which is good news for Microsoft given this one represents several firsts for Microsoft. I thought it looks stunning especially with the Windows 8 UI.

Will it help Mobile Learning? I see it making a big push in mobile learning because Microsoft Surface simply makes integration of mobile devices into an existing ecosystem much easier. I imagine the Surface will allow you to download files on your device (unlike the iPad), it also supports USB drives which makes it easier to ‘carry’ some learning material with you. The ‘Type Cover’ is also a great little innovation that’ll allow you do more with this tablet.

Apple iPads have a significant head start in educational institutions so there may be a conflict as a result of adopting multiple ecosystems. However, iPads have not been adopted aggressively in the corporate workspace as yet. Couple this with a steady decline of Blackberry devices as preferred corporate mobile devices and there is a perfect slot for Microsoft tablets and mobiles to fill.

The Surface will not be available till 2013, so we need to wait to see if actually does all it promises.
