In an earlier blog post, I had written about how Microlearning is changing the face of learning at the workplace. This post specifically talks about how a Mobile Learning Platform can be used as an effective Performance Support System.

What is a ‘Performance Support System’?

A ‘Performance Support System’ or PSS refers to any system that improves worker productivity by providing on-the-job access to integrated information, advice and learning experiences.

The four components of a good PSS

Advisory Component – The advisory component of the PSS usually consists of a job-aid in an electronic form. The learners can use the advice without having a deep understanding of the task. If they need to understand something in greater detail, the learners can access the other components of the performance support system. The advisory component is meant to provide help wherever and whenever the user requires it.

Information Component – The information component of the PSS consists of the tools that the learners can use to access information in the form of procedures, regulations, company policies, specifications, images, graphics, videos and podcasts. The information component is meant to provide all the information the users require to do their job.

Training Component – The training component of the PSS helps the user access training material on demand.

User Interface Component – The user interface is the most important aspect of the PSS. It seamlessly integrates all the components of the performance support system. The user interface enables the learner to navigate from component to component within the PSS. It is absolutely essential that the interface is user-centric and presents a consistent look and feel for all the components in the PSS.

Leveraging Mobile Learning Platforms

A good mobile learning platform provides users with a mobile enabled environment where they can access the training activities in the form of videos, podcasts, eLearning courses, quizzes and evaluation surveys and also enables them to use their mobile device to share knowledge with others (within or outside their team) in real-time.

We unveiled our mobile learning solution – Upside2Go – at ASTD TechKnowledge 2011. Upside2Go is equipped with a comprehensive set of features that make the management of learning for your mobile workforce easy and effective. Its right mix of traditional and innovative features work towards giving you an experience that truly surpasses place and time boundaries.

Upside2Go:

Puts training and performance support where the actual work takes place

Allows new skills or knowledge to be immediately applied

“There is only one thing stronger than all the armies of the world: and that is an idea whose time has come.” – Victor Hugo

At Upside Learning, we believe that this is the right time to leverage mobile learning at the workplace. We worked hard, came up with ideas, criticized them, went back to the drawing board, and came back with better ideas. Upside2Go – our mobile learning solution, is the culmination of our innovation process.

Upside2Go is a novel platform for mobile learning. It is a solution that will not only help your training department reach out to your mobile workforce easily, but would also enable a mobile-based approach to real-time sharing and collaborating, within and outside a team.

Upside2Go enables you to not only access learning content but also participate in surveys, polls and forums; network with friends and peers; seek answers from content experts; and much more. It also allows you to capture photos and videos from your mobile phones and share with other users leading to collaborative learning.

Key Features Of Upside2Go

Upside2Go has been designed to cater to the unique requirements of L&D departments and managers – delivering training and improving performance, while allowing the workforce to also share knowledge in real-time using a mobile device.

Designed to work with or without an LMS, it will ensure that you can manage learning effectively and easily – anywhere, anytime. Currently, it comes with a ready plug-in for Upside Learning’s multi award-winning, best value Learning Management System – UpsideLMS , however it can easily be integrated with any third party LMS as well.

Upside2Go will be formally unveiled at ASTD TechKnowledge 2011, on 3rd February at 1.00 PM (local time) by Amit Gautam, Director of Technology Solutions at Upside Learning. Explaining the nuances of the system, the session will showcase Upside2Go’s ability to help organizations manage learning for their mobile workforce effectively – anywhere, anytime. Attendees can look forward to getting a first-hand experience of Upside2Go in a live environment.

Upside Learning’s representatives will be present at Booth No. 504 throughout the event.

Recently, Upside Learning updated its website to reflect the evolution of our brand and services. We added pages that focus on our mobile learning services as well. I designed a simple diagram to visually communicate what learning situations mobile learning is apt for and the various that may go into making a mobile learning solution.

Mobile Learning can be used both in push and pull modes by users in times of learning need. Typically, tools are accessed just-in-time (Calculators, glossaries, information queries) as is some content (FAQs, etc) and social-tech enabled applications. On the other hand, organizations can push content in the form of audio, video and interaction to learners. It’s always a good idea to try and leverage the hardware a mobile platform my provide (GPSs in smart-phones). Game-based learning applications are also emerging on mobile platforms and provide a more engaging experience than typical courseware pushed to mobile devices.

The post Mobile Learning Solutions – Infographic first appeared on The Upside Learning Blog.
