International Women’s Day at Upside was a heartfelt tribute to all of the great women on our team. The day began with a fun and engaging game called Guess the Childhood Photograph, in which all female employees contributed a childhood photo. The excitement intensified as the images were shown one by one, and coworkers anxiously guess who was in each. It prompted laughter and happy recollections, resulting in a lively and welcoming environment.

The event was a magnificent combination of joy, acknowledgment, and friendship, underlining our dedication to acknowledging and encouraging the women at Upside on a daily basis.

In addition to the enjoyable activities, our female colleagues were greeted with a wonderful surprise when they arrived at the workplace. Roses and chocolates were put on their desks as a token of thanks. It was a nice surprise that added to the day’s specialness and meaning for everyone.

Celebrating Independence Day at Upside: A Day of Creativity, Play, and Delicious Food

On August 15th, as the country celebrated Independence Day, the spirit of togetherness and joy was alive and well at Upside Learning. The day was filled with a unique combination of creativity, fun, and companionship, making it an unforgettable experience.

The celebrations began with a photographic competition focusing on the topic “Sports or Animals/Birds.” Employees had taken amazing photographs in preparation, each of which reflects the vitality of sports or the beauty of nature. Some featured frantic athletic activity, while others highlighted the peaceful elegance of birds in flight or animals in their natural environments. The entries demonstrated the team’s ingenuity and commitment, inspiring debates and appreciation among coworkers.

As the day progressed, the team gathered in the cafeteria for a lively and entertaining game of hopscotch. The fun battle had everyone smiling and shouting as teams jumped through the squares, demonstrating their finest routines. Rahul Bansal and Siddharth Agarwal, Mitr Learning & Media’s co-founders, joined in the fun, playing the game and adding to the event’s colorful spirit. The hopscotch challenge evoked youthful excitement in everyone, converting the cafeteria into a center of fun and laughing.

The dress code for the day encouraged everyone to wear a tricolor mix of saffron, white, and green to symbolize the holiday’s ethos.

Following the activities, the team convened for a simple but gratifying lunch, where they shared a great feast, fostering a stronger sense of togetherness and community. The day was the right combination of creativity, play, and community, making it a spectacular Independence Day celebration at Upside Learning.

Diwali at Upside: A Festival of Colors and Creativity

As Diwali came in, the enthusiasm at Upside Learning was palpable, and we were all set to celebrate this happy event with fun and camaraderie. To make the day even more memorable, we planned a Rangoli Competition in which workers competed in teams of two to four people, demonstrating their creativity and collaboration.

The competition was a gorgeous show of colors and intricate designs, with each team collaborating to produce lovely Rangolis that lit up the workplace environment. The environment was filled with laughter and passion as everyone got into the holiday mood, exchanging ideas and working together to produce masterpieces that captured the genuine essence of Diwali.

In addition to the Rangoli Competition, we celebrated with a delicious lunch, allowing everyone to enjoy a full meal while bonding with coworkers. To add to the delight, each employee was given sweets and tiny tokens of thanks, making the day even more special.

Men's Day Celebration at Upside: A Day of Fun and Appreciation

Our Men’s Day party at Upside was full with laughter, camaraderie, and gratitude for the guys who have contributed so much to our success. We started the day with a fun and sentimental activity: Guess the Childhood Photograph. Upside Learning recently celebrated its 20^th anniversary. And it wasn’t just a celebration – it was a carnival extravaganza! Stepping into the grand venue situated on a lush hilly terrain, felt like entering a world of vivid colors and uplifting energy. Buntings and bright lights filled the space, and a majestic carousel welcomed visitors to embark on a nostalgic journey.

Every aspect reflected the carnival theme. Playful signs, quirky centerpieces, and massive popcorn buckets brimming with balloons set the tone for an evening of fun and merriment. Stilt walkers brought a touch of enchantment by weaving among the gathering and filling the air with enthusiasm.

Dazzling Performances

The celebrations began with an impressive show of talent. A musical band hit the stage, singing countless evergreen Bollywood numbers. The audience sang along. This was followed by a scintillating dance performance by the women of Upside who were joined in by a few little ones. Each performance, the result of diligent effort and friendship, captivated the audience. A passionate solo performance filled the air with melodies, leaving everyone spellbound with its raw emotion and artistry. The outpouring of talent and camaraderie on stage was a wonderful highlight of the evening.

A live band and DJ kept the atmosphere up throughout the night, with catchy tunes filling the dance floor. The atmosphere was alive with enthusiasm, thanks to the engaging host who made every moment remarkable.

Aishwarya, a vibrant host who kept the energy levels high and the attendees engaged throughout the night, served as the party’s anchor. The live band performed Bollywood music, which added to the celebratory atmosphere of the gathering.

The ‘floral’ clothing motif was one of the evening’s most memorable features. The visitors came in a variety of gorgeous floral ensembles, ranging from bold designs to delicate blossoms. It was a visual delight to see the brilliant colors and diverse designs on show, making for the perfect photo-op.

The night included not just music and food, but also enjoyable activities for the youngsters. The children had a great time playing the specially designed activities. A tattoo artist made lovely designs for the children, and the pot-making exercise was popular with both the children and their parents. Another favorite feature was the trampoline, where the youngsters could spend more time leaping up and down with delight.

The company had prepared various fun events for its members and their families, including the renowned “Guess the Movie” game. The game, which involves identifying classic movie phrases, was a big hit with everyone. Another exciting challenge was the “most selfies in a minute” game, which had everyone smiling and cheering each other on. The challenges were also a major hit, with individuals competing to see who could take the most selfies in a minute.

The night’s highlight was the awards ceremony when team members were rewarded for their great performance in numerous categories. Amit Garg, the CEO and Founder of Upside Learning presented the awards and took the time to individually thank each recipient. The awards included Most Dependable and Driven Employee, Best Learning and Practice, Best Learning Mentors, Best Growth Mentors, Most Inspiring Manager, and Most Impressive Debut. Everyone in the workplace was encouraged to submit nominations for these awards, and the winners were acknowledged with cheers and acclaim from their peers. The award ceremony was a testament to Upside Learning’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and recognition for its team members’ exceptional work. It was a special moment, with everyone cheering for the winners and celebrating their achievements.

Another beautiful moment occurred during the cake-cutting ceremony, with the kids taking center stage to cut the cake. It was simply precious to see their innocent faces gleaming with excitement and pride. Everyone shared a delicious slice of cake as the night came close.

Amit individually welcomed and talked with each family member, which was one of the most touching parts of the evening. It was a heartwarming gesture that demonstrated his gratitude for the team members’ families and their unwavering support throughout the years. The love and devotion in the room were evident, making it a memorable evening. He took the time to personally thank everyone for their hard work and dedication, which has helped the company achieve such great success over the years. It was a special moment, with everyone feeling appreciated and valued.

The guests were treated to a delicious buffet of scrumptious delicacies following the cake-cutting ceremony. The dinner was not only visually stunning but also delicious. That was the perfect ending to a fantastic evening, and everyone departed feeling satisfied and fulfilled.

Overall, the 19th annual year celebration of Upside Learning was a huge success. It was a celebration of the company’s growth and achievements, but it was also a celebration of its team members, their families, and their unshakable dedication to excellence. The party was full of laughter, joy, and memories that will be cherished for years to come. The event represented the essence of Upside Learning: it was warm, friendly, and entertaining. It will be a night remembered for years to come, inspiring the team to strive harder and achieve greater success in the years ahead.

Digitalization and Modernization Campaign

The year started with delving deep into the need for digitalization and modernization in the modern workplace. With automation in action, many new roles are emerging resulting into pressing need to retrain and redeploy talent for the new world of work. Modernization of learning is not just only about technology or speedy skilling, but also entails a lot more. We put our modernization focus and understanding into action and published a comprehensive eBook on the topic – Digitalize and Modernize Learning – Equip yourself to conquer the change constant.

Authored by Amit Garg, Founder and CEO and Aleysia Khan, Senior Manager – Instructional Design of Upside Learning, the eBook talks about Covid-triggered implications leading organizations to shift to digital business models and how it accelerated these trends, putting an increased premium on L&D as a means of equipping companies to handle both long-term challenges and short-term crises. It presents some viable options for organizations to digitalize and modernize their learning and strengthens reader understanding through supporting case studies and engaging stories.

Turning 18, in Style

In April 2022, we celebrated our 18th anniversary. Earmarking this special milestone, the Upside Learning team decided to get into the Bollywood mode to rejoice. We celebrated the special day at an upscale club in Pune, joined by our teammates and their families. The venue was recreated in Bollywood style, with extravagant décor, props, and life size cut-outs. The event had the perfect amalgamation of everything – delicious food, a rocking band performance, energetic dance moves, fun games, and a multitude of engaging activities that kept everyone involved.

Our curiosity and learning manifesto was also at an all-time high during the event. We have always emphasized on the importance of learning – not just to our clients but our own team as well. And our 18th anniversary was the right time to recognize our own learning champions and practitioners. We launched our ‘Annual Curiosity and Learning Awards’ a few weeks before our anniversary and on the D-day, gave away various awards in various categories. The event also celebrated long-service and other employee milestones.

We definitely are aging like fine wine! Aren’t we!

Wrapping up L&D Go Beyond Podcast – Season 1

We had launched the L&D Go Beyond Podcast in August of 2021 and explored a diverse range of topics that matter to the L&D community in more ways than one. The podcast received immense love and encouragement from the community and we have to acknowledge that every single conversation was a huge learning experience for us as well. We wrapped up season 1 of the podcast with 24 insightful episodes, featuring noteworthy guest speakers from around the world. The Voluntary Transition to Hybrid Work

While our team was working from home since the pandemic struck, our team managers had started realizing that work-from-home often posed a barrier to motivation and rapport-building, especially when new people joined the team. What was missed deeply by most is the office hustle – meeting colleagues in-person, working together, water-cooler chats, lunch and tea breaks, and the like. Though we wanted our teams to enjoy the flexibility of working from home, we didn’t want people to miss out on the perks of working from the office. In light of this, a monthly ‘Work from Office’ (WFO) Day was initiated at Upside Learning in June of 2022, for all employees, on a voluntary basis. The buzz of an office, a workstation shared with teammates, meeting them face to face, and experiencing the collective energy of the workplace were priceless. The sudden burst of energy and positive vibes were so evident that the WFO day became a weekly affair; meeting (and working together) once a month wasn’t enough for a bustling team like ours. Now, we work from the office once every week, voluntarily. We have to admit, we are thoroughly enjoying it! The pictures say it all.

AmiTea

This year we also launched AmiTea: A 30-minute 1-1 rendezvous between Amit Garg, our Founder and CEO and any Upsider who wishes to speak with him on matters important to them – it could even be a casual catch-up session. Amit has a treasure of knowledge across various subjects, and it is an absolute pleasure to speak with him in sessions like these. Every Upsider is presented with an AmiTea cup after their AmiTea session – a memento that you can treasure or even use to enjoy your ‘tea’. It is also a symbol of a ‘win’ at learning something new. Clark Quinn Joins the Upside Family

One of the biggest milestones of the year was world-renowned learning experience design strategist, Clark Quinn, joining Upside Learning as the company’s Chief Learning Strategist in September 2022t.

With our vision for L&D to ‘Go Beyond’, we embarked on a very interesting journey a few years back, which was fuelled by a better and deeper understanding of the learning science and research. We made remarkable progress and are at a key stage in this growth journey right now. This was the perfect time for us to have someone who believes in our vision and can shoulder the responsibility of helping both Upside Learning and our clients move to the next level. And it was our honour that Clark accepted to take up this role. With Clark’s support, we hope to enable L&D teams within our client organizations to be seen as strategic partners for their companies’ growth and not merely as internal solution providers for learning. A few months into this new role, Clark is already guiding and coach our team to create deeper learning experiences for clients through crafting evidence-based learning strategies.

DevLearn 2022

We were back with a bang at DevLearn in October this year, after an unplanned, Covid-induced hiatus of two years. Our team, stationed at booth #109, interacted with visitors and shared insights on how to deliver deeper learning experiences to improve retention and facilitate the transfer of learning at the workplace. We also showcased our award-winning solutions to visitors.

Clark Quinn – our new Chief Learning Strategist, also joined the team at the booth for a book-signing activity, a raffle giveaway of his latest book ‘Make it Meaningful’, and 1:1 consulting sessions for a select few visitors.

We had a number of exciting happenings planned and had a great show interacting and networking with the L&D community. Already looking forward to next year’s show.

Deeper Learning Focus

With Clark coming on-board and our enhanced focus on delivering deeper learning, we initiated our Deeper Learning campaign by publishing a whitepaper titled ‘Learning that Works.’ Authored by Clark, the whitepaper aims to give L&D professionals and learning designers a better understanding of how learning, when correctly designed, aids retention and transfer, making it both valuable and profitable. To quote the whitepaper, “To get learning that really works, that is cognitively effective and emotionally engaging, we need more. While there’s an educational movement for deeper learning, here we’re talking about what’s needed for effective and engaging workplace learning.” The whitepaper was followed by an immensely successful webinar on ‘Designing for Deeper Learning’, delivered by Clark himself. Celebrations at Work

We celebrated many festivals and achievements in office this year. Each get-together was full of smiles and laughter, fun activities, and good food. Even more delightful was to see colleagues dressed up in sometimes their ethnic best, and other times, dress-coded to perfection. These small and big moments definitely made our year brighter.

All in all, a fabulous year that will be remembered for many good reasons. And as the year comes to a close, we want to say a big thank you to our amazing clients who trusted and supported us in all possible ways. A big shout to our team whose hard work and perseverance keeps us going.

And so, on June 9, 2022, the first post-pandemic WFO Day happened, which celebrated working together in person, with many Upsiders coming to the office for the first time since COVID struck – skeptical, but hopeful.

The buzz of an office, a workstation shared with teammates, meeting them face to face, and experiencing the collective energy of the workplace were priceless. The sudden burst of energy and positive vibes were so evident that even our HR and Admin Teams and support staff, who work in the office every day of the workweek, requested we come in more often.

And so it happened! The WFO day became a weekly affair; meeting (and working together) once a month wasn’t enough for a bustling team like ours. Now, we work from the office once every week, voluntarily. We have to admit, we are thoroughly enjoying it! In-person meetings (with a few members joining in virtually over video calls at times), eating at the cafeteria together, group brainstorming sessions, and impromptu laughter sessions with our work buddies create a positive and motivating environment to work in. WFO days at Upside Learning are the perfect definition of ‘where work meets play’. Why you’d ask. Read on to find out!

The HR Team begins planning for WFO days at the beginning of the workweek, with a short survey being rolled out to the entire team for Upsiders to confirm their attendance so that arrangements can be made. A color theme is also decided and communicated a day in advance to promote team building through color psychology. Yes, we love being quirky that way!

The day begins with catching up with colleagues at breakfast; a fresh start with a fresh mind and a fresh vigor to make the most of the day. The first half of the day literally passes by in the blink of an eye, and we break for lunch. But before that, it’s activity time! The HR and Admin Teams arrange a fun activity for everyone to promote engagement, team-building, and of course, have some fun. There are small prizes for everyone who wins, adding to the excitement of actually playing for the prize. The adrenaline rush instantly influences the atmosphere in the room, everyone feels lighter and more in-the-moment. Lunch is then served. The chitter-chatter in the cafeteria at lunchtime is a sound that, I’m sure, most people missed while being away from the office.

Post-lunch, people look at completing tasks for the day and make the most of WFO with small team meetings or 1:1 sessions to discuss work items. Speaking of 1:1 meetings, AmiTea sessions, which happen on the WFO days are a huge hit! AmiTea is where Amit Garg, Founder and CEO of Upside Learning, has a 30-minute rendezvous with Upsiders who wish to speak with him on matters important to them – it could even be a casual catch-up session. Amit has a treasure of knowledge across various subjects, and it is an absolute pleasure to speak with him in sessions like these. Working from the office once a week also provides an opportunity to celebrate occasions, events, festivals, or any major milestones achieved by the company. As the first in-person celebration of Upside’s achievements for the year, we celebrated our Brandon Hall Group Award wins for 2022! Upside Learning bagged 12 awards this year, 7 of which were Gold and the remaining, Bronze. No celebration is complete without cutting a cake. Can you picture a group of about 60 people cutting a huge cake? That’s Upside for you! The celebrations also included goodie bags being presented to every Upsider who was in the office that day, irrespective of whether they were a part of the winning teams or not. That’s because we call ourselves a family for a reason – every single Upsider is equally important. The highlight of the day was the little postcard inside the goodie bag that read – “You are a Brandon Hall Group Award winner!” The card added a personalized touch and had everyone smiling ear to ear. Appreciation is an important part of our culture, and we practice it through the smallest of things.

With the workplace scenario altered, days like these create memorable moments to cherish. Upsiders now look forward to working in the office once every week. What started off with about 30% of the Upside team and the attendance is now at about 65%. With the way we are going, this number is forecasted to increase; WFO is here to stay, at least for this bunch of people!

Given that we may not be out of the woods yet, in terms of COVID still lurking around the globe, finding an ideal work model as the business environment evolves is challenging. In the meantime, we continue to provide flexibility in work which has always been the central pillar of our approach here at Upside.

The human brain is wired to be curious about the purpose of almost everything that exists. Curiosity is the foundation of purposeful action and mindful thinking. But is there a curiosity phase? Do we know when it occurs? Truth be told, curiosity is a continuous process, and it occurs unconsciously through day-to-day activities, all day, every day – at work, play, and most importantly, while learning.

In pursuit of nurturing curiosity, Upside Learning embarked on a learning journey in October 2020, when the world was exploring newer avenues to thrive amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The first pit stop on our journey was a company-wide subscription to LinkedIn Learning. The use of this platform was initiated solely by the urge for curiosity and not for any assigned mandatory learning. We have come a long way since then. The road ahead of us is competitive and challenging, but it is always good to reflect on the progress we have made.

In 2021, we introduced the Curiosity campaign with the Upside Curiosity Box being shipped to the home of every Upsider (during the lockdown phase) to build ‘curiosity’ for the campaign. It contained:

• a letter from Upside Learning’s Founder and CEO – Amit Garg that spoke about why curiosity matters
• a passport to LinkedIn Learning
• a couple of hand sanitizers
• a couple of masks with the text ‘Learning is like Breathing’ printed, and
• a few chocolates

An online event was also conducted that encouraged people to sign up, achieving 90% activation within two weeks! Additionally, we launched monthly wellness and other inspired challenges.

Shortly after that, Upside Learning was certified as a Great Place to Work by Great Place to Work® Institute (India) for the second year in a row. We scored a brilliant 78 on the TRUST INDEX© Score which was 6 points up from the preceding year’s score. We scored more than the average of India’s Top 50 Great Mid-size Workplaces on some more parameters. While that was great news, it indicated our people reverting with feedback to create more training opportunities. This year made it a hat-trick win!

Our goal at Upside was to make learning relevant, to make learning ‘stick’, fully recognizing that providing a library of content wasn’t enough. So we encouraged discussions between managers and their team members on the challenges faced in doing their current jobs well. That was the first stage of initiating curiosity about what worked and what needed to be worked on, which led to some well-directed and better-aligned learning opportunities.

Around that time, Founder of Global Curiosity Institute, Stefaan van Hooydonk 范汇东, launched a beta program for organizations – a survey to map their curiosity levels. Everyone at Upside Learning participated in the survey that brilliantly revealed insights about the team. The survey was followed by workshops that highlighted areas we could focus on to enhance curiosity levels, which we have made an effort to include in our initiatives.

A major takeaway was also the need to create a rewards and recognition system within the organization to encourage curiosity. On that note, our first-ever Annual Curiosity and Learning Awards were announced in March 2022. After extensive discussions with the team managers, the following award categories were finalized and rolled out:

• Protashing Managers: Managers who have been people motivators
• Seekhe Jee Jaan Se: Employees who passionately keep learning
• Jigyasu Jodidaar: Employees who are curious and keen to learn – generally ask relevant questions
• Gyaan Ki Dukaan: Employees who are experts in their work and are happy to share their knowledge with others to help them learn and perform better
• Learning Se Action Tak: Employees who learn enthusiastically and bring that knowledge to their work
• Vikas Mein Madadgaar Managers: Managers who actively support their team’s learning and development

The first award ceremony saw many deserving winners (some glimpses of the fun celebration below). We are sure there is going to be a longer list of deserving recipients as we tread forward on our journey.

Entering the second year of the Curiosity campaign, we initiated the #UpsideLearningHour, where the whole Upside Learning team dedicates an hour every week to learning – where no meetings are allowed and Upsiders are free to learn what they want, helping them upskill and reskill to develop their skillset. Some catch up on learning activities discussed with their managers, while others indulge in reflection and blue sky thinking. Either way, the purpose of learning and being curious is served.

Year 1 was exhilarating and satisfactory, while Year 2, so far, is proving to be a year of progress and achievement. We have renewed our subscription to LinkedIn Learning and are leveraging its features like curation, campaigns, and skills to our best. While learning is a continuous process, we are also learning to be more curious every day – to question, to find solutions, and be better than we were yesterday. We are learning to #GoBeyond.

Like any other start-up, the Upside team faced its share of highs and lows – sailing through the tough times and flying through the glorious ones. The journey has been nothing short of exhilarating with many memorable milestones and probably an equal number of challenges. But there were two things that always kept us going – the trust that our clients placed in us and a team that went beyond all odds and inhibitions to produce the best output always.

Celebrating Long-Service

Last but not the least, we also took the opportunity to felicitate our long-service employees on this special day. In times like today, when retaining employees is so tough, we are privileged to be working with some gems who have been with us for as long as 15 years. We are grateful that these employees chose to spend a considerable time of their life with Upside Learning. To appreciate their precious contribution towards the company’s growth, we announced a company-sponsored (up to 1 Lakh INR) 7-day vacation for these employees to Goa or anywhere they like. This time-off includes 5 days of additional paid leaves. This is a step ahead in our long-service recognition practice – we have been recognizing employees who complete 10 years with us, with a 10-gram gold coin.

The Saga Continues

It will definitely be an evening to remember in Upside’s history, not just because we turned a year older and better but also because most of us met in person after 2 long years of the pandemic. And the joy of meeting each other in-person can’t be expressed in words. Upside Learning has been fortunate enough to have come this far and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our employees and clients. Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards helping us grow by leaps and bounds.
