										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At the recently concluded LSCON 2015, I delivered a session on &#8216;Learning in a Multi-device World&#8217; that covered the areas of design &amp; development, testing, and delivering multi-device learning. Post the session, a visitor at our booth posed me this question: &#8220;At my firm, we are very keen to develop multi-device learning and we believe it will add great value to our learning function. However, we are not sure whether to use readily available tools or to get it custom developed. How do we decide?&#8221; If you want to start making money you should start <a href="https://www.irainvesting.com/">ira investing</a> so that you can save up money without even noticing and start growing your personal economy.<span id="more-7261"></span></p>
<p>So, how do we really decide? What are the relevant and key factors to consider? The decision has a significant impact on the overall objective you want to achieve in addition to having an impact on the budget, go-to-market (timelines and effectiveness), and the eventual success of the initiative, to be able to produce money online, using different strategies like the use of digital coins from this <a href="https://www.dcforecasts.com/bitcoin-news/">DCForecasts</a> news online. <h2>1. Target devices</h2>
<p>This is perhaps the most important and decisive factor to consider. If you are targeting only a small set of specific devices, say desktops and tablets (only iPads) or a slightly larger set of specific devices, say desktops, iPads and iPhones; using the tools may be a good option given the fixed devices and screen sizes.</p>
<p>However, if your target set is more diverse than this – desktops, tablets (small and big ones, iOS and Android), and smartphones (iOS and Android), then using tools may be a challenge as tools still lack the capability to produce outputs that can work seamlessly across a large array of devices. This may be relevant when you are catering to a BYOD environment and either reluctant or unable to restrict the devices a user may use to access learning. In such cases, the best bet would be to go for custom development using the core technologies. You could also look at using a few frameworks (not tools, more like development libraries) to create truly multi-device eLearning. E.g. There is an open source framework as well &#8211; ADAPT which may perhaps be evaluated. To reiterate, this is the most critical factor of all. Also when using tools, ensure that you have done a thorough mapping of your target devices and the tool being used so it caters to all of them. This brings me to the second factor.</p>
<h2>2. eLearning output</h2>
<p>Tools, in general are getting better and more powerful but some of them may still have limitations in the kind of templates they offer. Hence impacting the overall design and level of the eLearning output you will obtain. Notwithstanding the target devices being taken care of, you also want to create powerful eLearning. For eLearning that involves and uses animated simulations, scenarios, rich levels of interactivities – tools may offer only limited features to achieve those. For such eLearning, custom development (or using frameworks) may be a better idea. However, for eLearning used for Compliance Training, Video/Audio based training, relying more on graphics and text (with audio) – tools would be a good option.</p>
<h2>3. Where is the development happening?</h2>
<p>Most companies that develop all their eLearning internally either as a policy or business model tend to rely heavily on tools to do so as per this <a href="https://www.dcforecasts.com/bitcoin-news/">news source</a>. It is understandable and prudent, given the complexities in training, hiring, code maintenance, update, etc. However, if your development is outsourced, the factor which comes in play is more of long term code maintenance and content update.</p>
<h2>4. Time to market</h2>
<p>Another important factor to be considered in case you are working against tight deadlines. If your time to market is limited and rushed, using tools may be a better approach (subject to point 1) as tools generally reduce development time and testing time, in this case, we recommend using the Best methods for USA affiliates. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While managing training is unarguably a huge challenge to ensure everyone performs in line with the company’s goals, it is the period after the training is over, where employees need support and training cannot really help at that point.<span id="more-7194"></span></p>

<p>The advent and now the current adoption of mobiles even by corporates, for work, might just be the thing we needed to solve this problem. Here are my 5 reasons for believing so:</p>
<h2>1. Moment of need</h2>

The power of videos with the benefit of them being available online or offline (preferred for scenarios where connectivity is a big concern) is an excellent way to leverage mobile devices for performance support.</p>
<h2>5. Responsive Design</h2>
<p>In a way, responsive design is kind of a savior. The other method of developing performance support tools for mobile devices is/was to develop native apps for the mobile platforms.  And with 3 to 4 such platforms combined with the uncertainty BYOD brings to the table does make this approach both costly and time consuming. It is also a challenge to maintain and update in the long run. Responsive design saves the day by taking away the pain areas and still retaining the benefits. It also gives corporates a not very costly way to adapt existing tools/information material quickly for performance support through mobile devices without reinventing the entire wheel.</p>
<p>While the need for performance support has definitely not driven the advent of mobile technology, the other way round is a silver lining. The capabilities of mobile devices is definitely ensuring that providing performance support to employees when they need it and in real-time (response time) is easily possible and affordable. <p><span style="color: #000000;">We were informed that the UpsideLMS was a finalist in three categories and we were waiting to find out what award we were going to win.<span id="more-6432"></span></span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">When eLearning came into being through its early predecessors in the form of CBT and then WBT one of the primary reasons and its drivers was increasing acceptance of its potential to save costs due to the inherent advantages in centralizing (more with WBT) content, the reduction in logistics costs, persistent storage and to an extent uniformity in content delivery. It soon caught on as a medium which is now used as a part of learning strategy (in context of <a href="https://blog.upsidelearning.com/category/worksplace-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">workplace learning</a>) and not only helped companies save costs on a recurring basis but it evolved as a &#8216;learning&#8217; delivery medium.<span id="more-6369"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As an industry, eLearning has witnessed significant growth over the past years. Then the recession hit and not only did it disrupt the continuity of growth and momentum in the industry, but as I see it, even when fading away it poses another threat to eLearning industry. I will explain how.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Why Should We Assess Social and Emotional Skills? More and more, schools and after school programs are recognizing the importance of understanding their students’ social and emotional competencies. <p style="text-align: justify;">If the only thing the last 15 months or more of the cruel downturn has taught more companies than anything else, it is the need to be cautious on cash (and costs) front. Tremendous pressures were put on companies to save on costs (and continue even now, while a little milder) and more so to generate more value at the same cost. These pressures led organizations to react in varied ways &#8211; downsizing, rightsizing, blanket budget cuts, even training cost cutting, across the board salary revisions, etc. On one hand while the pressure to reduce costs kept on increasing and still is a reality, on the other there was also a burning need to upskill and reskill employees to generate more value and productivity.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This mix of cost pressure and need to still keep an eye on training to survive and grow beyond the recession phase, in my belief, started the second wave of adoption of eLearning. Over the past few years, as the industry was maturing, the focus was slowly, but firmly, moving towards producing learning solutions that impact performance and dollar numbers, this second wave <b>could</b> have a pull-back effect, potentially.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In the last few months (6 to 9 months) we (as a solutions provider) have seen an increase in inquiries focused on adopting eLearning primarily to compensate for the budget cuts and to reduce overall training costs. This is where my concern stems from. There are cases where the customers are looking for something quick, dirty and of course inexpensive. That these cases are increasing in number is a matter of concern, primarily for two reasons:</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;">
<li style="margin-top: -10px;">If such demand keeps increasing (and I believe as effects of the recession continue to get milder it will) there could be a surge in solutions which are good from a cost perspective but not from a &#8216;learning&#8217; perspective. This could undermine or distract from the progress and advancements the industry is making in coming out with innovation and solutions to enhance learning in self-paced environments.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 10px;">As more such solutions sell it would take another level of effort to evangelize and educate customers on the true value and potential of eLearning. This seems like going back a few good years and that isn&#8217;t good.</li>
</ol>
<p style="text-align: justify;">While I am confident that the recession is definitely proving and will continue to prove a booster in terms of revenue growth for learning solutions providers, I am also worried that it has the potential to erode the true value to some extent.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The bright side is that more companies are now able to produce excellent quality eLearning at costs lower than before and will still be able to offer good value at low cost striking the right balance. However a challenge still remains on the other front. How big this challenge will be only time can tell. As a company that provides high quality solutions we are pushing Innovation and development to ensure that we don&#8217;t fall into the trap (for the lack of a better word).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I&#8217;d love to hear more about this and how others feel about this situation. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have great respect for Apple as an organization particularly because I use an iPhone and I think the iPhone has definitely become one of those game-changers in the smartphone world and by a large margin.</p>
<p>I was looking forward to the Apple iPad even more so as we have been doing good stuff on mobile learning and putting up applications and tools on iPhone as pilots and on a trial basis. The iPad was supposed to be better and bigger than the iPhone, closer to a computer and much more than just a phone.<span id="more-6297"></span></p>
<p>However, from whatever I have been able to gather about it so far, including Apple’s own website I think the iPad is a big miss. To me it is just a big (physically speaking) iPhone clone (that too with something like a camera missing! Whoops!). Just this morning Amit Garg asked me about the iPad being a great tool for our sales meetings and I was excited too. However now I feel that’s not going to happen. Some reasons:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">1. <b>What would I carry an iPad for?</b> I need to connect to my family back home, talk to my team and do video calls regularly – with the iPad there is just no way to do that. If I have to carry my iPhone and a laptop anyway; why would I carry another device?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">2. <b>How do I store regular files in it?</b> Again, it is not meant for that. Without support for MS Office – I can’t even deliver good presentations. While I haven’t seen much about this; my experience with iPhone is a great indicator.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">3. <b>The missing camera. </b>While demonstrating our Innovation and new projects team’s work on <a href="http://blog.upsidelearning.com/index.php/2009/04/16/augmented-reality-in-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Augmented Reality</a> the iPad is useless without the electronic eye.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">4. <b>And most importantly – Flash support (rather the absolute lack of it)</b>. The eLearning industry thrives on Flash and without it how do I even present the great stuff we create to prospects. I have failed to understand reasons behind Apple’s continued ignorance of Flash. I am sure it is not technically challenging to build support for Flash in an iPhone or an iPad but then what is it that is keeping Apple from supporting Flash?</p>
<p>I’d best not make any big statements against or for Apple or any other company. Personally I was really disappointed to read about iPad. I hope Apple is not being blinded by the iPhone’s success. To me it looks like that somewhere Apple lost its customer focus while building the iPad. And as a result, it looks like I just saved a few hundred dollars. And as with all things Apple, there isn’t going to be iPad V2 with the missing elements being built in any time soon.</p>
<p>I would love to hear comments from peers in eLearning industry on the iPad and what it could have been for the industry. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Training companies the world over are changing the way they operate and the services they offer customers. An important one is the inclusion of eLearning (or online training) as part of their core offerings for existing and new customers. Such an offering is not purely driven by a cost-saving strategy on the customer’s part, but is also due to the growing acceptance of eLearning as an effective way of delivering training.</p>
<p>Training companies now need to enable themselves with the tools and technologies needed to go online with their training material and find the right systems and back end partners to support them during and after this crucial exercise. An appropriate Learning Management System (LMS) is the key to the successful execution of this piece of strategy. Because having a good system means being able to keep customers happy and delighted and also because what most training companies need is a system that runs robustly and has excellent support. <p>At Upside Learning, we have over 50 training companies as customers and believe that we know a thing or two about what kind of LMS a Training Company needs. Of course, some companies may need a little more or a little less but what I am outlining below serves as the typical set of features and functionalities required. This set has been prepared not only from what we have offered to our customers so far but also includes intelligence from the market as a whole.</p>
<p><b>Who’s who in the LMS?</b><br />
For the purpose of this post I am focusing on the premise that training companies will be using the LMS to host and deliver/sell their own training content online to their existing and new customers (or individual users).</p>
<p>They need a system that lets them have the freedom to <b>set up customer accounts on the system easily </b>and almost instantly with basic settings that can be configured through the interface itself. This means that the right system should have at least three distinct entities (or profiles) &#8211; <b>LMS Administrator</b> (Training Company); <b>Client Administrator </b>(Someone at customer’s end to manage their activities); <b>Learner / User</b> (Learner at customer’s end).</p>
<p>These three profiles ensure that both the training company and the customer can work on the system without much dependence on the LMS vendor or the training company for routine tasks like license management, course management, reporting, learner support for basic queries, eCommerce, etc. And you can also monitor employee activity by using online software which makes it very easy to monitor the work that they are doing.</p>
<p><em><b>Key point</b>: The LMS system must support a multi-portal structure where the training company itself can create an account for a customer and the system automatically creates a portal for it.</em></p>
<p><b>Hosting and Support</b><br />
Since the core business of a training company is offering training, what they need from the LMS vendor is a complete package on hosting and support. These two eventually form the backbone of the entire offering as the company needs to be absolutely certain about the reliability and availability of the system along with best-of-class support before they approach their customers. Eventually amongst customers, their reputation is at stake and being able to rely on the LMS vendor completely is a MUST. Most training companies seem to prefer the vendor host services like knownhost managed wordpress hosting and support the LMS.</p>
<p>Talking about Support in particular we have seen that even though we have the capabilities to offer direct support to end users, a few training companies like to keep Level 1 support at their end and then utilize our support as second line. This is linked to the requirement on white-labeling (mentioned further in this post) where the company wants to go as a self-sustaining provider to its customers. However the LMS vendor needs to set up proper systems and training for the company to provide support.</p>
<p><b>Branding of the system</b><br />
Most of our customers have wanted the system to be white-labeled (which means that the LMS carries no reference to the actual developer/vendor and is branded entirely as a system belonging to the company). Considering it involves cost some companies are good to go with a system which carries their main branding with a reference to the vendor. The flexibility to offer a white-labeled system, even at additional cost, is a big plus. This may become a key discussion point if the company has strong views on getting it white-labeled.</p>
<p><b>Standards Compliance</b><br />
The LMS must support <a href="https://blog.upsidelearning.com/2010/06/02/top-7-things-to-consider-before-implementing-scorm-for-mobile-devices/"><b>SCORM</b></a> and <b>AICC</b> standards. If the LMS also supports upload and delivery of a proprietary format (HTML pages without any compliance) or videos which have not yet been packaged as SCORM / AICC courses it is a bonus for the company as it entails no additional cost to convert those to a standards-compliant courseware. However it still means certain integration costs and may also mean losing out on the inherent advantages of using standards.</p>
<p><b>Functionality Modules</b><br />
In terms of the functionality modules, companies like to keep the entire system simple and easy to use and do not have a big list of functionalities required:</p>

<td style="padding-left: 5px;"><b>License Management-</b> Easy to use interface for adding / removing licenses either at the client level or course level for a client is a required feature. Once licenses are assigned, the Client administrator can then distribute licenses as per internal training needs.</td>

<td style="padding-left: 5px;"><b>User Management-</b> Even though these features may be present in the Client administration area, most companies like to upload (and manage) users for their clients through spreadsheets.</td>
</tr>

<td style="padding-left: 5px;"><b>eCommerce-</b> This is a requirement for training companies who already sell their training material online on their site and would like to continue the same model for online training as well. <td style="padding-left: 5px;"><b>Systems Integration-</b> The most common requirement for integration is with the primary website. Most companies already have a well established catalog and shopping cart on their primary website and would like to integrate the LMS with the same. The integration requirement is that the LMS becomes transparent as far as the shopping is concerned and that the users/clients can login through the main website itself and still be able to have a smooth transaction while using the offers and discounts provided by the website.</td>
